Dan Woltman, the University of Wisconsin senior-to-be from Beaver Dam, birdied the 18th hole against Patrick Reed of Augusta, Ga., to square their match only to lose to a birdie on the 19th hole in the first round of the 108th U.S. Amateur Championship at Pinehurst (N.C.)

Woltman, who was 2 down to Reed at the turn, won the first two holes on the back nine to square the match. Reed took a 1-up lead on No. 12 only to lose it to a Woltman birdie on No. 13. Reed regained the lead on No. 15 and held it until No. 18 where Woltman birdied the hole.

Woltman reached match play as the No. 3 seed after shooting a second-round 68 and finishing stroke play at 3-under 137.

By the way, UW senior-to-be and former Middleton athlete Dan Zimmerman (145) was eliminated after failing to get through a 26-man playoff -- which is the second-largest in U.S. Amateur history -- early Wednesday to determine seed Nos. 63 and 64.
