The University of Wisconsin women's basketball team has landed its first recruit for its 2009-10 class.

Ripon guard Taylor Wurtz recently orally committed to the Badgers, according to Paul Biddick, Wurtz's AAU coach with her Wisconsin Fastbreak Select team.

Wurtz, a first-team all-state pick by the Associated Press last year and a second-team honoree as a sophomore, chose UW over a number of schools, though Michigan was thought to be the Badgers' main competitor. Wurtz knew Wolverines coach Kevin Borseth from his time at UW-Green Bay.

Biddick said UW coach Lisa Stone attended 15 of his team's games during July, and that persistence has paid off.

The 6-foot Wurtz is the first of what is expected to be two players in the class for the Badgers.
