When men's basketball practice began in October, the leading candidates for the one open spot in Wisconsin's starting lineup were sophomores Keaton Nankivil and Jon Leuer.

So far, Leuer has outplayed Nankivil, who clearly is struggling in his first major minutes as a college player. However, Nankivil has remained the starter at center for Badgers coach Bo Ryan.

Here are some of the probable reasons for that:

1. Though he's two inches shorter than Leuer, Nankivil is a much more physical presence defensively in the lane. We all know that Ryan makes playing-time decisons based more on defense than offense.

2. If Leuer starts, then Marcus Landry has to guard the opposing center, as he did against SIU-Edwardsville Tuesday whenever Nankivil was on the bench. Forty minutes of banging in the post with the biggest guy on the other team might take away from Landry's offense.

3. Landry has been a shot-blocking machine in the first two games, but he, like most good shot-blockers, is better when he's coming from off the ball to swat shots. If he's guarding the center, the blocks might not be there.

4. Finally, Ryan has decent firepower in his starting lineup and he might like Leuer's instant offense off the bench.

Having said all of that, it will be increasingly hard for Ryan to keep Leuer out of the starting lineup if he continues to play like he did against SIU-Edwardsville.

Wisconsin Badgers men's basketball: Nankivil or Leuer?

I think it's clear at this point Nankivil isn't quite ready. It's too bad he didn't red shirt last season, a decision I don't understand. But I do love his upside. Sorry KC Badger Fan, Leur is NOT more athletic than Landry. Leur still seems a little uncoordinated and his shot is sooo sloowww. Love Jarmusz' effort on D thus far and everything about Jordan Taylor. I think he'll be a great PG. Offensively I think it will be a typical badger team, but i worry about the defensive end. the big men lack size and experience and I can't see Trevon embracing a Michael Flowers role.

ps I read Brian Butch got cut from his Chinese Pro team after one game! They were "very disappointed" WOW.

First off, it isn't about who starts, it is about who is in the game at the end, and in this case it's Leuer. Nankivil is a developing player who needs time to get used to the speed of the collegiate game. Remember, he didn't really play any significant minutes last year and the game for him is just going too fast as this point. You can tell when watching him, he is thinking, instead of just reacting to the flow of the game.
Leuer on the other hand is going to be an absolute beast when he realizes his potential. I think the SIU-Ed. game was a stepping stone. Yes, the competition wasn't top notch, but you could see the light kind of turn on in his head. I think he now realizes his importance to this team not only from the scoring aspect, but also the rebounding. He is clearly the most athletic big man we have (sorry Landry). His ability to score from the perimeter, mid-range, and post is clear. I think in time he is going to learn how to become a more established shot blocker. With his length, I would love to see him playing the 3 or 4 position in Ryan's swing offense. He would definitely be a match-up problem for the opposing 3's down low and the opposing 4's from the outside.
I'm excited about both players, but definitely feel that Leuer has more of an upside for this team and the next 2+ years he'll be with us.

I love Jon Leuer but he has shown his worth in one out of four (counting exhibition) games so far this year.

Sometimes offense isn't the only asset a player brings to a game. I see no reason why this is an issue. Keaton Nankivil provides the defense and fits best when he starts. It is not always the best player that starts. Didn't Dave Mader used to start? The author sites all the reasons that the lineup is fine the way it currently is and no real reason to change it. Doesn't Leuer end up getting more minutes anyways?

Why don't we just let Bo Ryan run things the way he wants to?

Silly, way to try to create a story where there is none. Nankivil is hands down the better team player. Just because Nankivil thinks about the offensive scheme every time down the court and how the game needs to flow versus Leuer jacking up the ball like its a hot potato. There is more to the game of basketball than being able to shoot the ball when you catch it. Leuer needs to mature in the scope of the swing offense and learn how to rotate the ball while picking his spots for his offensive opportunities. Leuer is what players and coaches call a ball hog or black hole. You never see the ball again once he touches. This is great when the ball goes in, but check out some game film from last year.....Leuer is not consistent offensively or defensively. There is more than meets the eye than the box score, but only those in the know can understand what the intangibles are to play team basketball.
