The Wisconsin Badgers men's hockey team leaves for Anchorage on Wednesday morning, so it had to make personnel decisions earlier than usual this week.
Patrick Johnson was back at practice, but only wearing a no-contact jersey. Without seeing him in a full practice, however, the UW coaches didn't want to risk one of their 22 travel spots on the sophomore.
"If we were at home, we could watch him skate and have our own therapy here," coach Mike Eaves said. "But because we're going on the road, if he gets dinged, then we don't have anybody."
Brendan Smith is out with what has been reported as a broken left wrist. Ben Street is still out after knee surgery. The senior hasn't resumed skating yet, Eaves said.
Tom Bardis also is not making the trip for this weekend's series at Alaska Anchorage. The fourth line is expected to be some combination of Sean Dolan, Matt Thurber, Podge Turnbull and Chris Hickey.
