The University of Wisconsin women's track and field program has placed 13 student-athletes on the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association's All-Academic team, matching the highest total of honorees from a single program.
The Badgers tied with Rice University for the most All-Academic awards for the 2008 season, which saw a record total of 468 student-athletes from 140 NCAA Division I institutions honored for athletic and academic excellence.
"It just speaks to what a great place the University of Wisconsin is, and the type of student-athlete we're able to recruit and work with here," UW coach Jim Stinzi said of his team's accomplishment. "It goes to show how hard they work both on the track and in the classroom."
The UW student-athletes recognized, with 2008 season eligibility and major, are:
To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team, a student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 or better and have met either the NCAA Division I indoor automatic or provisional qualifying standard or the NCAA Division I outdoor regional or national qualifying standard in their respective event.
The Badgers, who finished fourth at the Big Ten Indoor Championships and sixth at the conference outdoor meet, also had a total of 27 student-athletes named Academic All-Big Ten this season. In addition, May graduate Katrina Rundhaug received the 2008 Big Ten Medal of Honor for excellence in academics and athletics and also was named an Academic All-American by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
