BEIJING -- Matt Tegenkamp took more than 4 seconds off his time from the preliminaries in Saturday night's 5,000-meter final at the Summer Olympics.

Unfortunately for the former University of Wisconsin standout, the rest of the field took significantly more off their times.

Tegenkamp was 13th out of the 14 finishers in muggy, 86 degree conditions in the final at the Bird's Nest. His time of 13 minutes, 33.13 seconds bettered the 13:37.36 he posted in Wednesday's preliminaries -- he was the fastest qualifier -- but left him more than 35 seconds behind Ethopia's Kenenisa Bekele.

World record holder Bekele set an Olympic record to win the gold, finishing in 12:57.82. Kenya swept the silver and bronze, with Eliud Kipchoge second in 13:03.80 and Edwin Cheruiyot Soi third in 13:06.22.

American Bernard Lagat, the reigning world champion in the event, finished ninth in 13:26.89.
