Welcome to our first installment of Ask Lucas where Capital Times columnist and University of Wisconsin radio color commentator Mike Lucas answers your questions after each Badgers' football game.
Let's get started.
Hey, Mike, how did the Badgers look to you?
I thought Wisconsin dominated the line of scrimmage. We kind of expected that going in, just because of what Akron was doing schematically. This was a defense that was built for the kinds of teams they face within the Mid-American Conference, mostly spread offense.
So when you line up against a run-oriented or ground-hugging offense like the Badgers have with only three down linemen, there's no way you can compete on the line of scrimmage. Now, they tried some run blitzes early in the ballgame with little or no sucess. But I think, going in, Wisconsin felt like it could go out and run the ball and then went out and did it.
Mike, did we get a good read on Allan Evridge at quarterback?
It was a very tough game to evaluate a quarterback because he only threw 10 passes. I'm sure he would look at the throw that got picked off in the end zone and realize that when you're in the red zone you can't make that kind of mistake. At the very least, they had to be kicking a field goal in that situation -- especially on first-and-goal.
There was another almost-pick where he left the ball in the air a little bit too long. Those are some things that I think any quarterback understands will happen, especially a quarterback who hasn't had as much playing time over the last couple years and has been waiting for his opportunity to get back on the field. The evaluation of Evridge will be "to-be-continued" at a point where we'll find out a lot more about him when he needs to make a clutch pass.
This offense reminds me a lot of the '98 offense. It's just a coincidence that this is the 10-year reunion of that team. There isn't a Ron Dayne. But when you take a look at Mike Samuel's passing numbers from that season, I think by the end of this year Evridge's could be comparable in that he attempted 10 passes and that was pretty much what Samuel did throughout that year.
Mike, I thought P.J. Hill looked pretty strong today. What was your take on his performance?
Wisconsin's dominance on the line of scrimmage allowed Hill to get to the second level. It allowed all the backs to get into the open spaces. What was impressive about Hill today was his ability to make the tackler miss. You saw the quickness that maybe we haven't seen as much of or consistently in the past with Hill and his ability to make a decision, read and then bounce. Once he got into the open field, he made some tacklers miss.
Now, they're going to face much better secondaries than this one. And Akron's weakness coming into the ballgame was the fact that the five players they were using, only one had even started a game the previous season. I think they took advantage of some missed tackles. Was it more them or was it more Hill making them miss. I think it was a combination of both.
Mike, what happened to Bucky in the second quarter?
