DETROIT — The Detroit Red Wings re-signed 46-year-old defenseman Chris Chelios for one year on Tuesday.

Chelios enters his 25th NHL season and his 10th with the Red Wings.

The former University of Wisconsin athlete began his career with the Montreal Canadiens and also played for the Chicago Blackhawks. Last season, he became the second-oldest player in NHL history to appear in a game behind Gordie Howe.

Chelios has 948 points in 1,616 regular-season games.
