ELM GROVE -- The University of Wisconsin women's tennis team opened the season Friday at the Milwaukee Tennis Classic.
The Badgers started play in doubles against Texas A&M in the three day round-robin style tournament.
Sophomore Alaina Trgovich, a transfer from Kentucky, and freshman Angela Chupa were the only doubles pair to come out victorious against the Aggies in a 7-4 tie breaker against Sheri Oliver and Ashley Turpin.
Senior Elizabeth Carpenter and sophomore Jessica Seyferth fell to the Aggies tandem of Christi Liles and Elze Potgieter 8-3. Katya Mirnova and Aleksandra Markovic battled Morgan Frank and Lauren Santacroce in a close 8-6 match.
The Badgers then competed in singles against Alabama where Trgovich came out victorious again after two sets against Alice Turaru. Trgovich dominated the first set 6-2 and battled with Turaru to win the second set in a tiebreaker.
Mirnova, Markovic and Seyferth forced all their matches into three sets, making it difficult for the Crimson Tide. Seyferth won her first set decisively 6-1 but was unable to outlast Shelley Goodwin going 6-1 and 10-8 in the final two sets. Mirnova and Markovic both came back to win their second sets but fell in the third set 10-8, 10-5, respectively. Carpenter and Emese Kardhordo were defeated in singles play for the Badgers.
The Badgers will continue play Saturday when they go against host Marquette in doubles at 1 p.m. and Texas A&M in singles at 3 p.m.
