ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- By halftime Saturday, the University of Wisconsin football team had missed one field goal, committed two turnovers, dropped four passes, converted one of 10 third-down plays and scored one touchdown on seven trips inside the 50.

Thank goodness the Badgers were only playing Michigan. If they had been playing a good team, they might have been in trouble.

Instead, the ninth-ranked Badgers held a 19-0 halftime lead and got to watch as the inept Wolverines were booed off the field at the Big House, a derisive chorus from the maize-and-extremely-blue fans that was so loud you could have sworn Eric Gagne had come in to pitch.

Alas, just when it appeared they were about to win at a stadium where they've won once in 46 years, just when it appeared they were about to complete the first step in their season-opening Big Ten Conference crucible, just when it appeared their were about to make a play for national title contender status, the Badgers turned down the opportunity of a lifetime.

Instead of a chest-beating victory, UW suffered a crushing 27-25 loss to Michigan. The stunning outcome left the Badgers heartbroken and their season in peril with games against Big Ten powers Ohio State and Penn State next on the docket.

"We're not stunned," punter Brad Nortman insisted, "because we know how good of a program Michigan is and how year in and year out they're just that good. But I think we felt like we underachieved in the second half big-time."

There's only one problem with that. During Michigan's painful transition under first-year coach Rich Rodriguez, the Big House has turned into the Land of Opportunity for visiting teams.

Indeed, this is looking like it might be the worst Michigan team since the 1960s. And after gaining 21 yards and committing five turnovers in the first half, it looked like the worst Michigan team ever.

If UW had scored two or three more touchdowns instead of settling for five field-goal attempts in the half, the game would have been over and Rodriguez would be getting blistered on the home front just four games into his tenure. But UW left too many points out there in the first half and made too many blunders in the second to escape with a rare victory in Ann Arbor.

"We definitely have some opportunities out there that we let fall away," cornerback Allen Langford said. "That's why it hurts. It hurts real bad."

At least the Badgers knew where to point the finger for allowing the biggest comeback by the home team in Michigan Stadium history. If you don't think that's significant, you should know Saturday's game was Michigan's 500th game in the Big House.

"It was embarrassing," linebacker DeAndre Levy said. "Other than that, it was like I didn't know how to react. I couldn't believe it just happened, how we just basically gave the game away in the second half. ... But we really can't be angry at anybody other but ourselves."

Levy is right about that. As Michigan was scoring 27 straight points in less than a quarter, UW continued to commit turnovers, drop passes and come up short on third-down plays. Unlike the first half, however, those mistakes caught up with UW in the second half.

But it wasn't just the players who gave Michigan a helping hand. Where was UW halfback John Clay in the second half after he had gained 51 yards and a touchdown on two first-half rushes? And why was ailing tight end Travis Beckum sent in for the final two series when he had practiced very little, something that showed when Beckum lined up wrong and cost UW a game-tying two-point conversion?

No worries guys our recruiting is top notch. Next year we'll have the 72nd ranked QB Budmayer to come off the bench and give us a superior passing game! (SARCASM)

Blunt Coaching Failure says:
Totally a coaching failure! Bielema is one of college football's "brightest young coaching stars?" I don't believe it, haven't seen it. That is an ugly Michigan team, their worst in 40 years. The current edition of the Badgers is loaded with talent and depth. And Bielema and staff failed to produce a W?

Play Calling To Blame says:
This game was ridiculous. We should have been going into the half up 35-0 at a minimum. You have the ball on the 4 yard line with 4th and 1 and you kick it? Your already up pound the football down their throats.

The offensive play calling was atrocious at best. You had numerous 3rd and 1 opportunities and you run sweeps?I thought PJ Hill was a hard nosed back. If he would stop dancing and stutter stepping maybe he would have been more effective. All in all the offensive play calling was terrible. Everidge had man opportunities to run for the first down but instead through ball into double and triple coverage and then threw it to the inside towards the defenders not the outside where Jefferson and Gilreath could have easily caught the ball.

The play calling and terrible play by Everidge and Pj hill caused us to lose this game.
The Badgers need to fix the offensive scheme and let John Clay run the ball. Pj Hill is overrated and to have so many 3rd and 1 opportunities and only to convert one or two is absolutely laughable. Hopefully, we can pull it back together and not let this season slip away. I suppose these next two weeks will be the true tests of our team.

Go Bucky!

Fanatic says:
Wisconson football will be back after last weekend. The ability to not put the football in the endzone in the first half (red zone offense) and two failed easy third down and less than a yard to go plays (coaches call the plays) along with several dropped passes for long first down gains DOOMED THE BADGERS. Michigan looked awful at times but the 4th quarter looked in much better condition shape.

I know take Clay who just broke for 40+ yds, and then scored on the next play out of the game. Give the ball to P.J. who can't run two yds. then you'll win. Idiot!

Jackson says:
Why is Everidge so afraid of running the football? He had at least three 15-yard runs in front of him and never took off.

Mike says:
What makes this hard to swallow, besides the big
lead, play selection, etc., is for the first time
in a very long time, I thought Wisconsin appeared
to be as quick and more athletic than Michigan.
This just in - PJ Hill is our third best running
back!!!!!!! What a blown opportunity.

Umm...I hate to break it to you, but Baliemia is the one in charge of special teams. Just ANOTHER example of how he is completely over matched as a head coach!!!

For too many years you've accepted winning the Big Ten or the Rose Bowl? Wisconsin's last Big 10 Championship was in 1999. That's also their last outright championship since 1962. Granted, the Badgers did win three Rose Bowls in the 90s, but I think you're getting a bit ahead of yourself. Become relevant in your own conference, and then think about the national stage.
(9/28/2008 4:27 PM)
Badger77 says:
This was a very disappointing loss. It shows that this program is not ready to make a run for the national championship. This goal must be set in the minds everyone in the State of Wisconsin. For too many years we have accepted winning the Big Ten or Rose Bowl. The goal must be getting to and winning the BCS National Championship. This is not easy but if you set this as the goal, you will do everthing it takes day in and day out to achieve this goal. This is a game we had no business losing. We on paper are a better team, however if you don't show up and get your head and heart into the game this will be the result.

Staying with your blocks longer, releasing the ball sooner, making better reads, see the entire field of play when you are faced with an open field vs throwing into a crowd, better pursuit, staying with your coverage and get your hand on the ball. This is a gut check, what are you guys made of,- Coaches why do you call PJ up the middle when you are running against one of the country's best defense against the run. More traps, counters, sweeps, quick pass to tight ends or outs to the wide receiver. Establish the run with creative plays that exploit some weakness in the defense if you can recognize one. Play smarter and harder.

I love the Badgers and want to see them achieve somthing no other Badger Football has achieved - WIN THE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP

You're right you aren't Minnesota. Minnesota has recently won in Michigan and holds 5 National Championships in football.

actualfan says:
I can't believe some of these comments. Yes, they blew the game, it was a bad loss, the blame can fall on players and coaches. But to give up on the entire season seems a little premature. I mean me are not Minnesota for crying out loud! If you want to trash everything Badger, then get off the bandwagon now and don't come back. We don't need you!

Madison says:
Buzz if you think for one second we have a shot at a national title after losing the way we did to a Michigan team riddled with freshman and inexperience, then your about to face a sore reality. No way we win vs Ohio State/Penn State/Illinois and Michigan State. These players and coaches just aren't good enough to play at this level. On a team riddled with seniors, a "dominant" (yet laughable) 0-line and "talented" running backs we can't win against a team that has 11 turnovers in the last two games. Not only will we not play for a BCS Bowl Game but the probability that we even have a shot at sharing a Big Ten Title is long out the window. We can always look forward to mediocrity again next year though. Bring on CAL POLY, maybe a game we can win!!!
(9/28/2008 12:03 PM)
Buzz says:
Calm down you Badger fans. Yes, you lost but so did USC, Georgia, Florida etc. It is tough to win
on the road....no matter what team, no matter how
easy a game might look on paper.
Buckeyes went from possible national champs to
national chumps. You lossed but that game is over. You have a good team and program.
You know Bucks and Nittany Lions are going to have
one hell of a time at Camp Randall....Badgers will play well at home...they always do.
One loss is not a season...and anymore...it means you are still in contention for a spot in the BCS champion bowl.
No team will be unbeaten this year....none.
I love college football..
on any given Saturday, or half, you just never know.

Guys don't throw in the season yet. Just watch as we pummel OSU and PSU the next two weeks.

While we should have won, Michigan was so bad in the first half, I think it was impossible to stay pyshced up.

Home field is a big deal and that's why the Badgers will win the next two weeks.

TX Badger says:
No wonder the media picks on the Big Ten. Wow! All we did was confirm that on national TV. Who coached Evridge on the 2 step drop and wait all day to get sacked philosophy? Or the roll out pass? Is Evridge the best we can do? If so, we're in BIG trouble. Can't the staff recruit a real QB? They sure can't coach a game and it looks like they can't coach in practice either. Let's see, opposing team game plan for the remainder of the year ... 11 guys on the line. I saw no real need to cover any receivers yesterday. Either Evridge got sacked, threw somewhere away from the receivers or they dropped the lucky passes the made it to them. Unless there is rapid offensive and coaching improvement, the schedule looks like 5 L's in a row. If we can sneak by Indiana AND Minnesota, we might be able to look forward to the Motor City for the holidays. Woo hoo!!!

rak says:
why not spread out the run attempts more. pj doesn't seem to be running as well this year. give zach and clay more opportunities. how many times did pj get stopped on 3rd and short - give it to rentmeester and pile straight ahead. i don't think he can be stopped for less than 2 or 3 yards. evridge has no touch on his throws - keep him out of the weight room for a while. were the coaches so sure they were going to win that they didn't open up the offense so future opponents wouldn't see what they could do. or was that the innovative offense of paul chryst? his head coaching opportunities probably lessened a little bit after that one.
(9/28/2008 10:02 AM)
BadgerFan says:
I agree that the coaches are responsible for this, between terrible play calling and letting the only two guys who can actually hold a catch sit out, at least until it was too late. Evridge was actually not that bad; neither interception was his fault. The one time he fumbled near the endzone he never should have been passing in the first place, so put that on the coaches too.

That said, when the game was over, the refs restarted it with a roughing the passer call and then only after seeing the Badgers tie it did they throw a penalty flag to make sure the home team would win. At least the WAC officials had the decency to apologize when they tried to turn the Fresno game against the Badgers.

jd says:
QB is terrible, and his recievers are worse. Tis is a tough Badger team to watch. Last year it was the defense, and don't get me wrong, they still stink but they can hang in there. This year????
If its not a terrible pass, the reciever lets it hit him everytime, and bounce off with no chance of catching it?? I watch high school football with better recievers, I dont get it?

Detroit for Christmas! says:
NEWSFLASH:
After the game in Ann Arbor, Bret Bielma was seen booking his room for the Motor City Bowl in Detroit. I'm not sure what that means, but with Bret and his crack team working at this level, we all will have plenty of chances to explore Detroit around the holidays. I think we can get to 7-5. Good thing we have 3 non-conference games.
(9/28/2008 9:08 AM)
BiGTen Fan says:
Jamie, you are correct when you say, "Head Coach Bret Bielema can take credit for this loss, but you guys won't even touch him. COWARDS!!!" Goates, Maggot, And Pukas, have always been Alvarez's biggest bootlickers!! It now apears that they have become Bielema's also. It is very rare for these so-called, "columnists" to be openly harsh with the Badger staff. I imagine that the three of them are spending the mowing Alvarez's lawn and pulling weeds at Bulimas place!! Also, In Polzin's "column", he already has the Badgers putting a check in the victory column by halftime. I guess he is learning his craft from the other three "writers" I hope that Maggot, Goates, and Pukas finish doing Barry and Brett's laundry by noon, so they can watch the Packer game!!(Too bad Bucky lost, it reminds of the game against Indiana where the Badgers were up by about 31 points by half and ended up losing 35 to 31, at home!! (I may have the score incorrect, but it was similar to that.) The Badgers were outplayed, it happens!! Go BUCKY!!! Beat OSU!!!
(9/28/2008 9:06 AM)
Garett Gilles says:
This loss was entirely on the coaches, as a coach you're job is to put the players in a position to succeed and that did not occur with the play calling on Saturday.

Phil says:
For a school that has a lot of embarrassing losses, this is the most embarrassing loss in University of Wisconsin football history. If you're doubting that statement, show me another game where Wisconsin lost after having a 19-point lead, the other team committed 5 turnovers and Wisconsin outgained them by 120 yards.
(9/28/2008 7:48 AM)
Randy says:
Wisconsin was gassed by the 4th quarter and the Michigan fitness program exposed us. Michigan has spent the last 6 months conditioning in ways that UW has never seen. Couple that with the loudest crowd I've ever heard in that place and we were doomed. We quit the game long before it was over. I'll be happy to see us win 4 of our remaining games.
(9/28/2008 7:34 AM)
frustrated bucky fan says:
I am so sick of this program going through the Alveraz and Bielema years that lose to some team every year that they shouldn't. No wonder the national scene never respects us. We have never had a killer instinct and let sub-par teams hang around and this is what happens. I put it on offensive play calling (thats you Chrsyt) and no imagination. Granted when they did try something our stone hand wideouts helped us out. Playing status quo every week will burn us. Hold on sportcenter is showing highlights of the game. I'm back and yep the second half still sucked. Lucky for me I know people in Detroit and I get free room and board for the Motor City bowl this year!

(9/28/2008 12:44 AM)
tim says:
I totally agree. This loss was solely on the coaching staff. What kind of coaching staff doesn't prepare the team to play a second half? did they just go over all the press clippings that suddenly sprand up? Did the defensive coaching staff suddenly decide to go into a prevent style defense for the second half? And what IS with the offensive run-it-up-the-middle play calling? And to top it off, what kind of numbskull special teams coach doesn't coach his team to line up right on a two point conversion?!?!?!? The team would be better run from the huddle by the players who can better understand what is going on, because the coaching staff sure can't. 7-5 isn't looking like a long shot all of sudden.
(9/27/2008 11:06 PM)
Jamie says:
Here is where you sportswriters have to point YOUR fingers NOT at the players of this game, like passes dropped, etc.
The entire game was a blunder every time Bielema called another running play. He set up the O-line to fail because there was -O- finesse or variety or unpredictability in his game plan.NONE!

He might as well have sent Mich. a telegram, I'm running on first and probably second, and then we'll pass.
Disagree w/ me??
How did they get beat:
The D was on the field the entire game;
The Mich. D was able to plan one thing, just stop the run, because they don't seem to want to pass;
and last but not least*
How did Mich. beat them, they faked the Badgers' pants off for 2 second half TD/s.
Head Coach Bret Bielema can take credit for this loss, but you guys won't even touch him.
COWARDS!!!
Wait'll they face OSU and PSU. The truth will be told, at least by the op.'s press.
