The temperatures went down and the scores went up Sunday, but that didn't keep University of Wisconsin freshman Jessie Gerry from finishing off her first collegiate golf victory Sunday at University Ridge.

After shooting 71-66 in Saturday's 36-hole opener, the former Madison Abundant Life golfer struggled to a final-round 78 at the Badger Invitational. But her 54-hole total of 1-under-par 215 was still good enough for a 3-shot victory over Georgetown's Chelsea Curtis (74) and Maryland's Jessica Hollandsworth (71).

Gerry, who had 12 birdies during the first day of competition, failed to record any over the final 18 holes. She bogeyed Nos. 3, 5, 6 and 10 and also double-bogeyed No. 9.

Competing as an individual, Gerry's effort did not factor into the UW team score. Instead, the Badgers rode junior Molly Schemm of Fort Atkinson to a second-place showing.

The transfer from Northern Iowa shot her second straight 73 and finished tied for fifth at 4-over-par 220. The Badgers also counted a pair of 75s from Heather Herrick and Carly Werwie and a 77 from Kelsey Verbeten in their closing 300 that left them with a 902 total -- 13 shots behind second-ranked California, which won the tournament with an 889 total.

Four other UW golfers joined Gerry in competing as individuals and three of them -- like Gerry -- placed ahead of three golfers in the Badgers' scoring lineup. They were: freshman Ellie Arkin of Reedsburg (76-229), senior Jenna Dahl (73-229) and junior Ann Marie Sztukowski (79-230).

Beth Weinstein (80) finished ahead of two golfers in UW's scoring five.

The Badgers return to action Saturday at Iowa.
