It was tight end Travis Beckum's decision to go into the game at Michigan in the fourth quarter Saturday after the University of Wisconsin football team fell behind.
Just like it was Beckum's decision not to play in the game at the start, though he was cleared by the medical staff.
Now, it remains to be seen how much impact Beckum can have on the Badgers going forward after his inability to shake the hamstring injury that has bothered him since fall camp.
Beckum's latest aggravation of the injury came a week ago Thursday.
"During our bye week, he practiced really good on Tuesday and Wednesday, tweaked it on Thursday, sat out the entire week last week," UW coach Bret Bielema said Monday. "(He) went into the game and basically was cleared from a medical standpoint but we put it in Travis' hands.
"Any time you're dealing with the type of injury he has, we can't see it, we can't feel how he's feeling. We left that up to him. He didn't feel comfortable."
Beckum came into the game with 5 minutes, 3 seconds remaining after UW fell behind 27-19. He caught two passes for 17 yards and looked to be a hero after his catch on a two-point conversion appeared to tie the game with 13 seconds left.
But the play was called back by a penalty for ineligible receiver downfield and the Badgers lost 27-25. Beckum incorrectly lined up on the line of scrimmage, making tight end Mickey Turner an ineligible receiver.
Adding some confusion to the events surrounding Beckum is the subtle changes in Bielema's version of events.
Bielema gave the impression last week Beckum had practiced at least one day.
After the game, Bielema said the decision not to play Beckum had to do with him not practicing at the end of the week.
"For Travis to get out there and be effective on every play, he needs to practice," Bielema said Monday. "When I was making reference to (that), if he was on the field, any hesitation I would have as a head coach (was) he didn't practice, I wouldn't know how he would be able to play."
Beckum wasn't available for interviews after the game.
Two other times when it looked like he was close to being back to full strength, he has aggravated the injury. The first time he did it was late in camp and caused him to miss the first two games.
Bielema said he expects Beckum to practice all week and be available to play against Ohio State on Saturday night.
The status of two players who missed the game, tight end Garrett Graham (foot) and receiver Maurice Moore (groin) is up in the air. Moore is expected to practice today and Graham could be back on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, cornerback Aaron Henry (knee) won't play this week and seems headed for a redshirt season. That decision must be made by the end of next week.
Effort questioned
Senior fullback Chris Pressley questioned the effort Sunday night of some players after watching the tape of the game. It turns out Bielema had the same opinion, but limited it to two plays.
"Chris Pressley was echoing the thoughts of his head coach, when I addressed the team on Sunday," Bielema said.
