PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. -- Former Portage athlete Craig Cerbins, playing in his first collegiate tournament, shot a 1-over-par 72 Tuesday to help the University of Wisconsin finish second at the St. Mary's Invitational at Poppy Hills Golf Course.
It was the first time all weekend that Cerbins (79-80-72) had his score count for the Badgers, who shot a 283 in the final round to finish the 54-hole event at 8-over 860. That was 5 shots behind champion San Francisco and marks UW's best finish since tyring for fourth at the VCU Shootout last Oct. 1 and 2.
UW's low round of the day belonged for Beaver Dam native Dan Woltman, whose 2-under 69 left him in a tie for 11th place at 2-over 215 (73-73-69).
Jordan Elsen, a junior from Kenosha, had the best finish of his career, finishing in a three-way tie for third place. Elsen, who entered the final round in fifth place closed with a 70 to end the tournament 2-under 211 (72-69-70).
He also set a 54-hole personal best by 5 shots. His previous best finish was a tie for 17th at the 2006 Memphis Invitational.
