University of Wisconsin senior quarterback Allan Evridge needs to play better to hold on to his starting job.

That was the direct message to come out of coach Bret Bielema's Monday news conference.

Following back-to-back losses to Michigan and Ohio State, Bielema said he was evaluating several areas. But he made it clear he expects more out of his quarterback.

"As a football coach, you look at positions that haven't played as well as you'd like them to play," Bielema said. "There's a lot of guys on our team playing as good a football, or better, than we thought they could to begin with, but Allan's not immune to that. Obviously, the next guy in would probably be (junior) Dustin Sherer."

After a brief pause, Bielema clarified Evridge will still start Saturday night against Penn State. But Bielema's endorsement didn't extend beyond that.

"You don't need to read into it, Allan's going to start on Saturday and be our quarterback," Bielema said. "There comes a point in time where you have to make an assessment of where we are as a football team."

The biggest issue Bielema has with Evridge is a lack of accuracy, which has gotten worse as the defenses UW has faced have gotten better. Evridge's accuracy was the No. 1 question about him coming out of fall camp.

Evridge completed 24 of 36 passes (66.7 percent) the first two games against Akron and Marshall. Since then, he has completed 45 of 86 (52.3 percent) the last three games, starting at Fresno State.

In the two losses, Evridge has completed 33 of 62 passes (53.2 percent) for 373 yards and two touchdowns with three interceptions. Dropped passes have hurt — unofficially, the Badgers had nine drops in those games.

Evridge also has fumbled four times in that span, counting an errant pitch against Michigan, losing three.

"The part Allan has to be able to improve upon more than anything is probably his accuracy as a passer," Bielema said. "There were a number of plays in the last two games, in particular — and they've surfaced in every game — where the ball might be a little behind (the receiver), a little over him, a little under him."

The coaches had high hopes for a new play featuring tailbacks P.J. Hill and John Clay in the same backfield. Hill was supposed to catch a pass out of the backfield. Both times, errant passes contributed to incompletions, though Hill should have caught the second one.

"The first one was about 5 yards in front of P.J.," Bielema said. "The next one was a couple feet over his head. Now, you'd like the second one to be able to be (caught). Bottom line, we've got to expect the ball to be delivered with better accuracy."

Evridge, a transfer from Kansas State in his first year as a starter for the Badgers, has completed 69 of 122 passes (56.5 percent) for 899 yards on the season, with five TDs and four interceptions. He ranks seventh among Big Ten Conference quarterbacks in passing yards (179.8 per game) and fifth in passing efficiency (125.4).

He had one hot stretch against Ohio State when he completed four straight passes for 72 yards during a 2-minute offense at the end of the first half. The rest of the game, he was 9-for-21 for 75 yards.

He really struggled on third downs, completing four of nine passes for 36 yards. He also has had an issue at times holding on to the ball in the pocket too long.

UW football: Evridge still starter, but Bielema expects more

It's good to have positive attitude. Yes, you can say they have been practicing hard, they have load of homework to do, stack of books to study. However, just as the other football teams in other Big10 colleges, they all have a full year of practice, they all have to study. But they are winning the games. And one of the reasons we are losing is definitely the talent of the coaching staff and/or the player(s).
One more point to make: we gotta face the reality. In the real world, no matter it's NFL, NBA, or even in any company we work out there, if you don't perform, you are out. You may not get a 2nd chance to redeem yourself. Alan, Coach B, you are having your Nth chance now... I hope you can redeem yourselves in the PSU game this weekend.

PSU has physically dominated this team two of the last three years. This weekend will not be an exception. Bucky is playing the next Big 10 champ Saturday.

Hey guys, we barely lost a great game to a healthy B.Wells and the most physically gifted QB in all of football, including the NFL,.........and we're ready to shoot our players? What I saw was a GREAT game. Both teams played as hard as they possibly could...I mean that some of those licks were bone jarring. It's painful for the fans to loose, but think about the players who have a full time year around job preparing to play in addition to carrying an academic load. They wanted to win more than any of us in the stands.
Let's not be so shallow. If in the last 2 weeks, our receivers had caught the balls that hit them in the hands, Alan would have 2 less interceptions and 9 more completions. His stats would be very respectable. If our D had been able to stop their long final drive to take the lead, the Badgers would have won and all of this "hang the QB" would never occur. I know, that's a couple of "ifs", but consider how close to the thrill of victory we were, and give our guys a break. Were we all beaten as children?

Clay needs to play more..Carter needs to play less...Evridge needs to stop passin it to the other team..the defense needs to stop missing tackles...we need to regroup

Brian says:
Evridge has been an issue...no doubt. The starter on UW who has played the worst however is Shane Carter. Every big play given up by UW this year boils down to one of three things...1) Carter taking a horrible angle on a running back and the back running right past him...2)Carter in "pass coverage" which means he is within 20 yards of the receiver and then his buddies tackling his man...3)Carter just flat missing tackles. Ohio State's biggest plays (2 runs by wells, passes on the winning drive) were the direct result of Carter not doing his job. All of his interceptions are mis-leading. He is clearly the weakest link in an already soft secondary and UW hasn't even played a passing team yet this year. Penn State will surely take their shots at Carter.

Buckyguy says:
Regarding the OSU game: It's pretty sad when a true Freshman QB out performs a 5'th year Senior QB. Evridge was staring down the primary receiver all night long. He rolled out and pumped faked twice before throwing that last pick while looking directly at the receiver the entire time. Meanwhile, Pryor did make some Freshman mistakes during the game but when it counted he guided his team for the winning TD. Perhaps the KSU coaching staff knew what they were doing in benching Evridge when he was there. Time to play the other QBs and see what they can do.

Can someone tell me which person, BB or Alan E. is the young 20 something kid? Is it just me or has BB begun to blame almost everyone except for the people that are truly the problem. I believe that earlier this year he was blaming the media for the team's problems, who's next...the fans??Yes BB, that would be you and your coaches. BB reminds me of Steve Alford, lots of talent on the court(field), an excellent resume, but could not bring it to the game. BB, just like Alford, spent most of his time blaming his players rather than looking at his coaching. I have to wonder what will happen when BB is playing only his players and not living off of Alvarez's players?? Maybe Bo Ryan could run both teams??? Can you hear that sucking sound?? That is the sound of BB coaching the players...GO BUCKY!! Beat PSU!!

vonruden says:
Typical Wisconsin problem. Strong running backs and a weak passing game. The Badgers have never been able to recruit a 5 star QB. Bielema has to make that a priority in the future. No more running quarterbacks.

Eric The Blue says:
Here's the answer to UW's quarterback woes. DON'T PLAY ONE. Alternate direct snaps to John Clay, P.J. Hill and Zach Brown and never, ever throw the football again!

Dick Hemp says:

WI is missing big time by not mixing in the shotgun formation more consistently throughout the game. It seems the coaches throw it in when time is running out or the offense needs to scramble. Everidge appears to thrive on the shotgun, as evidenced in his last drive at Michigan and the last drive before halftime against OSU. I do not know of any top 10 program that does not utilize the shotgun formation periodically throughout the game. We are kidding ourselves to think we can win only on the run and keeping the QB under center. It seems that Everidge does not have the necessary vision or time under center, as he does from the shotgun position. This alone would have placed the Badgers undefeated YTD, in my view!

Jake says:
I thought we would beat Michigan, we didn't, I actually thought we would beat Ohio State altho the betting line surprised me, 1.5points in favor of Ohio State. The agressive defense most of the game was obviously told to go to prevent in the last series, and that defense has never prevented anything. If I were playing on this team, I would be extemely frustrated with the calls coming from the sidelines!! We may have to change QB's, and PJ goes with him, being there doesn't entitle you just because of longevity. Defense was supposed to be bad, but it has held us in there.

The coaching gaffs are glaring!

BB's public clarification of Evridge's interception?
Com-on, grow up & get your head in the game!!

BB is going to lose this team and the spiral down is coming for this year.

LOOKING IN says:
I think it's interesting that Bielema deceided to contradict and ridicule a statement Evridge made to the press about his last interception. Here's a 40 year old coach mocking a 20 year old kid.

You learn something more about Bielema just about every other month.

Time for a Change?? says:
Nice! Brett hangs Evridge out to dry but do we hear any explanations about the lack of simple football the the Badgers can't play? They can't line up right, can't snap it in time, can't get it in the end zone, can't call a play that makes sense, and need their time outs on first down! Evridge might deserve to lose his job, but what about our ENTIRE coaching staff? last play of the game and the defense is confused? can't get a snap off after a time out? can't score more than 19 after you get five turnovers? use a time out because you can't get a play in on time? Looks like a lot of people should be looking for work.

Bill says:
Watching Evridge late in the fourth quarter is like watching Turnbow or Gagne coming into the game, you just know it's going to blow up. This season is over. Start grooming the next QB now.

Long Live the Badgers says:
The question of if Evridge needs to be benched or split time needs to be asked now and happen if improvement is not shown against Penn State. Sadly I think the simple fact is he does not have a Big Ten arm. Maybe Evridge can show more with his feet but I think Chryst puts his players in a position to use there specific talents, he is a smart coach and has not really done this so to me that answers that. I found a poll on if Evridge should be benched over at http://www.badgersmix.com , it is worth a look and a vote lets see what fans are thinking.

BadgerSteve says:
Coaches all over the sidelines and upstairs and nobdy sees the clock run after the TV timeout. Are these guys brain dead. Running option football with Hill and Everidge at key times or trying to throw swing passes to Hill, what the hell is Chryst thinking? Use Zach for that kind of stuff. Why is Carter still allowed on the field, he is so clueless. I would quit going after the "fastest and most athletic" linbackers and d-backs and just get some kids who understand and can play football.
(10/6/2008 4:01 PM)
0-2 says:
At least Bielema is putting players on notice. Albeit two games too late. But Coaches like Paul Chryst, Dave Doeren and Delvaughn Alexander (Wide Receivers coach whose doing terrible) need to be put on a short leash as well. Not that it matters much now, the season is lost. We might as well start prepping for the Motor City Bowl.
(10/6/2008 3:52 PM)
BADGERBOY says:
We have 20 coaches on the sidelines and in the press box and no sees the clock running after the timeout!!!! What are these guys paid for? What is with the stupid swing pass to Hill, when he can't even raise his arms over his shoulder pads. Or trying to run option football with Hill and Everidge. And that center screen is useless, it will get picked off in one of these games and returned for TD. Shane Carter couldn't not start on most highschool teams, what the hell is he doing as our free safety.
(10/6/2008 3:42 PM)
TNT says:
When is someone...anyone going to ask Bielema the hard questions???? Why have we wasted time outs after an injury time out and after the clock has stopped....why don't the players know where they are going at this point in the season???? Until the coaching staff get's their act together, don't throw your player(s) under the bus. I'm sick of homer apologists like Lepay and Lucas in post game interviews and talk shows where their interest is making the buck and not asking the questions that need to be asked....I paid over $3K this year and I think I have that right.
(10/6/2008 3:22 PM)
Garett Gilles says:
I want more from Bielema. The coaching staff should put players in a position to succeed and I don't know if we are doing that right. Evridge does need to be more accurate and see the field better, but the play calling isn't helping him out. Also, why is John Clay not playing? Please someone answer that question.
(10/6/2008 3:19 PM)
LOOKING IN says:
You hate to see a kid lose his starting job, but the situation needs to be addressed. Their is no reason that the Q-back if taken out of the starting position can't come back later in the year and contribute. I'm sure everyone wants him to do well against Penn State, but considering the circumstances the other kid deserves a chance too.

This is a good example of coaching philosophy.

Coach A plays only (1) Q-back in the early cup cake games.

Coach Z plays the backup Q-back as much as possible during the early cup cake games.
(10/6/2008 3:04 PM)
Rico D. Great says:
Well I'll tell you one thing, it's not the QB or RB's or Offensive Line. I think the problems are coming from a staff that has no idea whats going on. How can we have the Biggest line and RB's in the conference and not be able to pick up a 4th and short. This all comes down to a lack of coaching... If our coaches actually had some idea of when a defense is going to blitz we could run hot routes, screens, and draws like the teams that are beating us.

Evridge is not the problem of this team. It's a coaching staff that's been starting New QB's every year. A staff thats not recruiting as well as the competition, a staff that's satisfied going to San Antonio and Tampa. Look at the process Michigan went through to find it's new coach. That shows me that these guys are serious about winning. Lets do the same shall we
