University of Wisconsin senior quarterback Allan Evridge needs to play better to hold on to his starting job.

That was the direct message to come out of coach Bret Bielema's Monday news conference.

Following back-to-back losses to Michigan and Ohio State, Bielema said he was evaluating several areas. But he made it clear he expects more out of his quarterback.

"As a football coach, you look at positions that haven't played as well as you'd like them to play," Bielema said. "There's a lot of guys on our team playing as good a football, or better, than we thought they could to begin with, but Allan's not immune to that. Obviously, the next guy in would probably be (junior) Dustin Sherer."

After a brief pause, Bielema clarified Evridge will still start Saturday night against Penn State. But Bielema's endorsement didn't extend beyond that.

"You don't need to read into it, Allan's going to start on Saturday and be our quarterback," Bielema said. "There comes a point in time where you have to make an assessment of where we are as a football team."

The biggest issue Bielema has with Evridge is a lack of accuracy, which has gotten worse as the defenses UW has faced have gotten better. Evridge's accuracy was the No. 1 question about him coming out of fall camp.

Evridge completed 24 of 36 passes (66.7 percent) the first two games against Akron and Marshall. Since then, he has completed 45 of 86 (52.3 percent) the last three games, starting at Fresno State.

In the two losses, Evridge has completed 33 of 62 passes (53.2 percent) for 373 yards and two touchdowns with three interceptions. Dropped passes have hurt — unofficially, the Badgers had nine drops in those games.

Evridge also has fumbled four times in that span, counting an errant pitch against Michigan, losing three.

"The part Allan has to be able to improve upon more than anything is probably his accuracy as a passer," Bielema said. "There were a number of plays in the last two games, in particular — and they've surfaced in every game — where the ball might be a little behind (the receiver), a little over him, a little under him."

The coaches had high hopes for a new play featuring tailbacks P.J. Hill and John Clay in the same backfield. Hill was supposed to catch a pass out of the backfield. Both times, errant passes contributed to incompletions, though Hill should have caught the second one.

"The first one was about 5 yards in front of P.J.," Bielema said. "The next one was a couple feet over his head. Now, you'd like the second one to be able to be (caught). Bottom line, we've got to expect the ball to be delivered with better accuracy."

Evridge, a transfer from Kansas State in his first year as a starter for the Badgers, has completed 69 of 122 passes (56.5 percent) for 899 yards on the season, with five TDs and four interceptions. He ranks seventh among Big Ten Conference quarterbacks in passing yards (179.8 per game) and fifth in passing efficiency (125.4).

He had one hot stretch against Ohio State when he completed four straight passes for 72 yards during a 2-minute offense at the end of the first half. The rest of the game, he was 9-for-21 for 75 yards.

He really struggled on third downs, completing four of nine passes for 36 yards. He also has had an issue at times holding on to the ball in the pocket too long.
