There was no hiding the way University of Wisconsin redshirt freshman Josh Oglesby was feeling Saturday night, as he ran out on the Camp Randall Stadium field to replace injured left tackle Gabe Carimi.

Then again, it's hard to hide when you are listed at 6-foot-7 and 328 pounds.

When Oglesby reached the huddle, early in the second quarter against Ohio State, the offensive line veterans tried to reassure him.

"They all did," Oglesby said. " 'Calm down, calm down.' They said, 'I've never seen someone's eyes so big.' "

It was understandable, given the atmosphere of the night game, the caliber of the opponent and the fact it was Oglesby's first extensive playing time.

"I'm not going to lie," he said. "I was pretty nervous when I stepped out there on the field. It's a lot different practicing and then stepping out there in front of 80-some thousand people and you've got a bunch of guys screaming at you and running at you."

So, what was running through his head?

"Don't get beat, please don't get beat," he said. "That's all I was thinking."

The way Oglesby handled the situation and ended up performing, are further evidence of why so many are so excited about his future.

"If you had to take something positive from the game," offensive line coach Bob Bostad said of UW's 20-17 loss, "(it) was that I thought Josh showed a lot of people that he certainly belongs on that field."

Said senior left guard Andy Kemp, "I was proud of him. (Guard Kraig) Urbik and I, we talked to him when he came in, 'Just trust the protections, trust everything you've learned since spring ball, through camp.' I didn't think he flinched."

Prior to the game, Oglesby's playing time had consisted of mop-up duty against Akron and Marshall and a few snaps in the jumbo formation in short-yardage situations.

"Nothing against Akron and Marshall, but it's a totally different game, when you go from Akron and Marshall to Ohio State," Oglesby said. "Nothing against those teams, because those are great competitors. Anyone who is at this level of competition is a great athlete. It's just a little different speed in the Big Ten."

Not only was Oglesby thrown into a tough spot, it came at a position he had not practiced since fall camp. Oglesby had worked exclusively as the backup right tackle since camp ended. The Badgers are trying to redshirt junior Jake Bscherer, the backup left tackle, so Oglesby went in at that spot.

He came in on the second play of what turned out to be a 15-play, 91-yard touchdown drive.

"Midway through that drive, I was like, 'I'm out here, I'm doing it, I'm holding my own against some of the best guys in the country. Let's get after it,' '' Oglesby said.

Oglesby has always excited coaches, fans and teammates, because of his impressive combination of size and athleticism.

"He makes me look tiny," said Kemp (6-6, 315). "That's one thing, with that big of a guy (and his) explosiveness off the ball, he's so big, he can just handle people."
