There is something to be said for fresh legs among defensive linemen in the fourth quarter.

That's why the University of Wisconsin football team is spending the week trying to get redshirt freshman defensive end Louis Nzegwu ready to play in passing situations against Penn State on Saturday night.

The Badgers need a fourth defensive end after freshman Brendan Kelly was lost for the season with a thumb injury suffered in practice a week ago.

One of the many factors in Ohio State's game-winning 80-yard touchdown drive in the fourth quarter last week was the lack of pressure on quarterback Terrelle Pryor.

UW coach Bret Bielema said Nzegwu, who is from Platteville and has played mostly on special teams, "could have been a factor in the fourth quarter."

The Badgers were down to a three-man rotation at defensive end with Dan Moore backing up starters Matt Shaughnessy and O'Brien Schofield.

They also would like to beef up a pass rush that is tied for ninth in the Big Ten Conference with nine sacks. Schofield leads with three. The only other player with more than one is linebacker DeAndre Levy with two.

Nzegwu, 6-foot-3, 228 pounds, is fast and athletic, but does not have much experience at the position, since he was a high school running back.

"You've got those guys that have repped and repped and repped," Bielema said after Thursday's practice. "Louis isn't at the level of those other guys on an every-down snap, from a normal down-and-distance situation.

"In the fourth quarter, when we needed a pass rush, we needed something out there, that's one thing we really tinkered with this week, maybe giving him an opportunity, after the first half to be in there and be some fresh legs."

Carimi doubtful for Penn State

UW sophomore left tackle Gabe Carimi did not practice all week and almost certainly will not play against Penn State. But Bielema was still holding out faint hope that Carimi, who injured his right knee in the last game, could still recover in time to play.

Redshirt freshman Josh Oglesby will likely get his first start. He played well as Carimi's replacement for almost three quarters against Ohio State.

"Gabe didn't practice (Thursday) but the game experience he's had, if he can go on Saturday, we'll let him go before Josh," Bielema said. "If not, Josh had a good week."

Evridge lets controversy pass

Whatever whirlwind has been circulating around the quarterback position this week, Bielema said starter Allan Evridge has been immune to it.

Bielema said his reason for not allowing Evridge and the other quarterbacks to talk to the media during Tuesday's interviews was because of a story written in one of the papers that day.

"He really just concentrates on getting good as a football player," Bielema said of Evridge's approach. "I don't know how much he lets the outside world come into his life."

Taylor, Harris to redshirt

Bielema gave updates on two injured players who are redshirting, freshman linebacker Mike Taylor and junior wide receiver Xavier Harris.

Taylor had neck surgery to correct a problem that bothered him during his football and wrestling careers at Ashwaubenon. He returned to practice two weeks ago in a green non-contact jersey and could be cleared for contact in two weeks.
