For a team whose coaches and players talk incessantly about being strong finishers, the University of Wisconsin football team has been anything but since the Big Ten Conference season began.

UW had fourth-quarter leads on Michigan and Ohio State in its first two Big Ten games and couldn't finish the deal. Both times, the Badgers' inconsistent offense couldn't put enough distance between UW and the opponent and their defense, after stellar performances in the first half, kept giving up big plays — and leads — in the second.

The Badgers vowed to be better finishers when sixth-ranked Penn State came to Camp Randall Stadium Saturday night, but we'll never know if they were prepared to live up to their word. After all, you can't finish what you don't start.

Whether it was because the Badgers had a letdown after two crushing losses in the Big Ten or because undefeated Penn State is simply that much better than Michigan and Ohio State, UW never got anything going in its embarrassing 48-7 loss to the Nittany Lions.

But no matter why you think UW was dominated at home like it hasn't been since a 51-3 loss to Miami (Fla.) in 1989, this much is certain: In three weeks, the Badgers have gone from being finishers to non-finishers to, well, just plain finished. At 3-3 overall and 0-3 in the Big Ten, about the best they can hope for is to win out and go to some ho-hum bowl game.

"You could never envision anything like this," linebacker Jonathan Casillas said. "Senior year and we come out and lose two straight to quality opponents and then basically you've got one of the best teams in the country come in and just physically manhandle us. It's very disheartening."

At least we'll know why a team that was picked to finish second in the Big Ten is floundering only three games into the conference season. The mistakes the Badgers made against Penn State were the same ones they made against Michigan and Ohio State, only this time there were more of them.

After a turbulent week in which considerable fan discontent surfaced and coach Bret Bielema said players would be held accountable for their performances, little changed. Indeed, it was same old, same old for the Badgers.

"The thing that's been killing us, and it's the same thing every week, is those little mistakes," center John Moffitt said.

The offense, normally inconsistent, never got started against the Nittany Lions, going three-and-out on four of its first five series. By the time the Badgers had their first offensive highlight — Allen Evridge's 42-yard pass to Travis Beckum — they trailed 17-0.

Bielema said Evridge had to improve or face losing his job, but even though Evridge was 2-for-10 with two turnovers, there were more to UW's struggles than the quarterback. On Evridge's first dropback, he was smothered before he could plant his foot as five Nittany Lions were fighting each other to be the first one there.

On defense, UW could have shed its label as a unit that wilted in the second half but instead confirmed it.

The Badgers' 24-7 halftime deficit was due more to lousy field position and Derrick Williams' punt return for a touchdown than poor defense, but when the defense had a chance to make a statement at the start of the second half, it failed miserably. Penn State drove 76 yards on six plays for a touchdown on its first series, 82 yards on seven plays for another TD on its second.

Oates: UW is finished before it even gets started

Don says:
If we are going to take a hit, why not do it with a young QB who can improve with experience? No reason to go with an inexperienced senior every year just because he's a senior. It only creates the same problem season in and season out. We got away with it twice, third time wasn't a charm. This edition didn't work in Kansas, remained on the bench here, then was suddenly annointed starter because he hung around long enough to be a senior. You can bet whoever is waiting in the wings will be just as raw next year but he'll be a senior so the downbeat will go on. Michigan and Ohio State aren't afraid to start a freshman or sophomore. Why not try finding a talented high schooler and molding him into a leader? If he fails there will always be some inept senior standing around! Of course playing an undrclassman would require extensive quality coaching. Could that be the real underlying reason for ignoring such an approach?

Holy TOLEDO just how bad are this years Badgers, lose a 19 point lead, and game to a michigan team that lost to a 2-4 mid-american team, the Toledo Rockets!! So once again we will see at the end of the season if the Big ten has any team with enough moxie to compete for a national i.e. PSU but dont hold your breath I.E. OSU last 2 seasons.

Don't blame PSU for running up the score, the lame BCS bowl format dictates that a team beat another team convincingly. Besides if you don't want the score to be run up stop them. Their second teamers need practice too. I am disturbed by the number of mistakes a veteran team is making week after week and they are always the same. This screams poor preperation and bad game time coaching. It certainly is not my place to evaluate recruiting, but it seems to me that since Brett's recruits have taken over the win/loss record has suffered. Say what you want about Barry's conservative approach, but his teams were fundanmentally solid and virtually mistake free. We cannot say that about the new regime.

Lowell Mays says:
I am pleased Oates calls it as it is. The UW f'ball season is hopeless. The hype is sour, the performance is weak, the coaching is unimaginative and there is an incredible void in Leadership. Leadership has never been a key component at the UW. If one wants to find leadership----look to Bo Ryan or Mark Johnson. They outline a mission and get the teams to go out and accomplish it for the TEAM...for the UW. Others seem to only have the vision to accomplish whatever for their own goals and that shows through. Perhaps a page should be taken from Leckrone's notebook---he apparently stuck his neck out and exhibited Leadership. Football is over this year and recruiting will be tough with this miserable showing. Leadership is a lost word in Bascom and has been for a long while.

DaveR says:
I don't think the problem is "little mistakes". We just do not have the talent out there to compete. I wonder if we have more talented players sitting on the bench who don't play because they aren't seniors. Clay is clearly a better running back than Hill, but Clay plays only sporadically. Sherer is clearly better than Evridge. He is taller, has a better arm and is confident. He has as much talent as any Big Ten QB we have seen so far this year with the possible exception of the OSU kid who is a terrific athlete. Casillas and Levy are clearly mediocrities even though they have started for three years. The defensive line is undersized. The gave up 40 to 50 pounds per man to Penn State. Schaunessy should be a lineback, not a defensive end. He might have the talent to be a great one, but we will never know. Don't we have more talent than this sitting on the bench? If we don't, we need a new coach. We aren't making all of these mistakes because we are poorly coached. We are making them because our players are outmanned and they lose concentration because of it.

67 and Counting says:
What positive statements can be made of a team that does so little correctly? The Badgers were throttled on offense, defense, special teams, and coaching. There is considerably more talent now than during the Don Morton era, but the score Saturday night was similar. In my view, Bielema deserves the remainder of this season and possibly next season to turn things around. Wisconsin recruiting has been 5th to 7th best in the Big Ten for several years. It's tough to win without adequate talent. Bielema and staff need to restructure the program, starting with recruiting and ending with Big Ten championships (a national championsip every 100 years or so may be too much to even dream about).

Concerned Alum says:
Barry Alvarez forced out Pat Richter, essentially hired himself (Chancellor Wiley in awe of this nut) hired Bielema (because he's a kid that he can control), and has a bunch of yes men and women (if you can call Neubauer a woman) working in the athletic department is a major mistake that Chancellor Wiley, Casey Nagy (Wiley's guy responsible for Athletics), Sandy Wilcox (UW Foundation President), Paula Bonner (Alumni President), Govornor Doyle (you know him), should all be held accountable. Wiley left the wonderful UW with a mad man at the helm of our most visible and cherished department. I hope the new chancellor can step up and either remove the mad man or at least bring him under control. I have to say, I am less upset that we lost a football game and more disheartened by the smug and thug way Alvarez carries himself. It reflects poorly on all Alumni - even the state of Wisconsin. When I lay down at night I pray for the young men and women of the Athletic Department that Alvarez is leading. Really, shouldn't the chief of the AD be a man of integrity - not one that is a... you can fill in the blank as I don't want to upset Cindy.

I just hope we can bring strong character back to Athletics. Pat Richter had faults (too laid back at times, took care of the old boy network, etc.)but you at least know he was a man of character and integrity.

New Chancellor - it's up to you to save us all from a mad man!

I was at the game last night. Maybe it was just me, but i felt most of the boo's were geared toward the coaching staff. They seem to make the same bonehead mistakes every week for the past few weeks. By no means should people freak out and call for bielema and the rest of the coaches to be fired. However, it is definatley concerning. The rest of the season should say a lot about this football program's future. Yes quite of few of the boos were for Evridge as well. The bottom line is that he is a very ineffective QB. I admire him for giving his best effort, but unfortunatley effort alone doesnt win games. Fumbling, INT's, Missing open WR's, holding onto the ball too long, indecisiveness, getting balls batted down. This just doesnt cut it in the big ten. Sherer probably isnt the answer either. He didnt look a whole lot better. WI has plenty of playmakers on offense. So either our QB's are absolutely terrible or the playcalling is totally ineffective. Probably a combination of both. Hopefully some of the younger guys will use the rest of this season to get some reps and gain some experience. I cant help but think next year could be worse though. If the defense is getting shredded this bad now, just think how bad it could be when all the seniors are gone. Bielemas recruiting classes arent exactly what one would call "stacked" either. He gets the in-state talent and thats about it. I guess that is a good thing, but it only produces maybe 1 or 2 four star recruits every year. Then the rest of the class is made up of the leftover guys ohio state, michigan, michigan state, illinois, and penn state dont want. Right now, not a whole lot of help is on the way except curt phillips and tyler westphal. Its kind of depressing to think about.

I have expected the demise of the badger football program for quite some time due to the ever growing hubris of the athletic department in general but the football program in particular. Barry is declared AD, Bielema is appointend head coach w/o competition, preferential seating, rinky dink rented seat back cushions, etc. these clowns are headed for a very big fall.

Maybe Bielema should intern with Bo Ryan, a guy that can get the best out of his players no matter the talent level. This team couldn't tackle last year (coaching), makes stupid alignment/assignment mistakes this year(coaching), gets out-adjusted at half-time (coaching), what am I missing here? I'm surprised SNL didn't do a skit re: the "in-the-tank" treatment the Wisconsin media gives Bielema

psu fan says:
Wisconsin tries to win by knocking out as many of their oponents as possible. The helmet under the chin is a common way Wisconsin tackles. A few years ago Wisconsin knocked out two Penn State quarterbacks by hitting them under the chin with their helmets. Last week you knocked out a Ohio State player in just that way. So it is amazing that a Wisconsin fan talks about sportsmanship.

Run up the score? What a whiner. How about knocking the PSU qb's out and piling it on a few years back. Just shut up sour grapes whiner.

Looking for a new team says:
Big Ten Fan,
What do you mean "Almost every Big Ten team and major program has hit the skids at one point recently". This isn't a new thing for the Badgers, sure losing at home twice in a row may be, but being a mediocre program who whines about not being given credit at the begining of every season isn't new. This same thing happens every year, they do a so-so job their first few games as their ranking climbs only to drop a couple of games later in the season. I was a big fan of Brett but am starting to think otherwise, he may be a smart football guy but other than that he is just average. Aaron said the only are Brett is good is in recruiting...he hasn't recruited nearly as well as other big ten coaches. Tim Brewster at Minnesota had a horrible year last year finishing 1-11. And are building a new stadium that seats only 40000 and he manages to pull in one of the best classes in the country. If you look at the top 50 recruits for next year the badgers aren't being considered by any. The rest of the big ten is mentioned in there at least once...even Indiana! Time for a make over across the board, new coaches, new philosophies, time for the badgers to start over. Start with a new D-coordinator!
(10/12/2008 12:12 PM)
Big Ten Fan says:
Wisconsin lost to the better team, there is no shame in that. Almost every Big Ten team and major program has hit the skids at one point recently (PSU,FSU,Miami
As for the running up the score, I am sure there is no love lost with Coach B after his poor sportsmanship of several years ago in taking intentional off sides calls on kickoffs against this same PSU team. Yea, it was within the rules. but you can't talk sportsmanship after that kind of stuff. Just step up and have your Defense stop the other guy. It's hard to do, but sometimes you gotta just take a kick in the pants like we all have and move on to the next week. Bucky will be back.

Bbaum says:
I'm trying to look at WI's current situation with an open mind. We've been spoiled with great seasons the past few years. We rarely have a home loss, so people are freaking out now. Maybe overreacting a little bit. Give Bielema the rest of the season to see if he can make things right.

However, it's hard to overlook the mistakes in the past three games. Illegal formations, illegal substitutions, the defense always seems to be confused, blowing timeouts because the playclock is about to expire or they cant get the plays in on time. These are mistakes that shouldnt be repeated in consecutive games. And it is disheartening for both the players and the fans.

They committ to Evridge during the week and say that he's the starter, then start the game with like 10 consecutive runs. This shows zero confidence in his ability.

I think the most frustrating thing for me was the fact that WI is down 31-7 when they get the ball for the first time in the 2nd half, and they run the ball two straight times. Its like....ok you're not going to score 24 points gaining 4 yards at a time.

The offense has become about as predictable as a rock. For example, everybody knows that if its 3rd and long, most likely WI will run the TE screen. Its just frustrating to watch. And I think the players are frustrated with it as well.

All we can do is hope things improve.

It's tough to replace a legend who has a statue of himself.

Don't fool yourself, Old Bret is controlled by Barry Alvarez. The program has not changed much from what they were doing a few years ago. It's all about confidence with college athletics, you can't let one loss turn into two or three and that is what happened. Now we are in the same spot Iowa was 4 weeks ago when they switched QB's. Good thing it's an early game.

Depressed Badger says:
Approval Ratings:

Bush 20%
Pelosi 18%
Bielema 15%

Might was to spend some time house hunting in Iowa this week. Barry should also take some blame for putting a Top 20 program in the hands of an inexperienced Bielema.
(10/12/2008 10:24 AM)
BSH says:
Bielema shouldn't be calling out players, when the coaching is obviously a big part of the problem. How many penalties - 8?!? That's coaching. Unable to play four complete quarters? That's coaching.

If we get to Cal Poly still looking to get a sixth win, I seriously hope UW will decline to go to a bowl game. Bowl games are for winners.
(10/12/2008 9:48 AM)
Badgerbacker says:
What a disgrace to Badger fans all over. This loss should confirm that UW should be looking to get out of the Big-10 and start booking games with the Suburban league. They match up much better with the likes of Verona, Cottage Grove, Waunakee, etc. Bielema is one of the highest paid coaches in the Big-10 and his team, coaches and game plan was that of a highschool freshman. Three running plays and a punt, three running plays, and a punt. Got that routine down now. Can't blame the whole game on the quarterback, but he certainly showed why he never made it in Kansas and should have been replaced here a long time ago. Sad times for Badger fans, until we start playing in the Madison suburban league.

Nate says Iowa will be our 1st road loss of the season. Perhaps he doesn't remember our little trip to Michigan? Ohhhh, it keeps hurting, and more to come.

Aaron says:
William 5, I agree with you completely, and not Tim's comment. The only area of coaching where Bielema is very solid is recruiting. But his conservative style of offense and defense and always playing to not lose (rather than playing to win) has to go. We have the athletes, but Bielema doesn't do anything with them. I'd like to see a REAL head football coach who's already proven himself (comparable to an Urban Meyer or Steve Spurrier). I think the last three games are evidence that Bielema is not capable of major success as a football coach.

William, I'm not quite sure if we were watching the same game if you think the Badgers can match up with Penn State talent wise. Penn State is big, fast, talented and deep. The Badgers are big.
It isn't the X's and O's it's the Harry's and Joe's.

craig says:
The writing is on the wall here. Bielema is not a good coach, nor does he fit in well in Madison. btw, I wonder how easy it is going to be for him to pick up waitresses at the steakhouse now?
This brings up another point, Barry needs to do his job as an AD and realize his mistake, start thinking about a replacement! Lane Kiffin would look really good in red and white!
(10/12/2008 4:00 AM)
William 5 says:
yeah, this Joe Pa blogger is an idiot.

If any Badger fan thinks this rests on Evridge, or any one player, you're an idiot. A point I made last week... this is no longer about talent, which, as any Badger fan of the last 20+ years will tell you, is rare. We can match up with anyone in the country.

The play calling to start the game was about as lame as a high school coach trying to save his ass. "just dont' lose" was obviously the game plan. Bielema better look in the bloody mirror before he starts pointing his fingers at 20 year olds. Homey made his name inheriting a program created by a legend... otherwise, he's brought nothing but mediocrity. The D refuses to step up and make a play, and the O calls plays to avoid a mistake. We looked like the b*tches the coaches game plan made us out to be. Unbelievable.
(10/12/2008 12:30 AM)
Joe Pa says:
I want to go on the record as noting what poor sportsmen the Penn Staters were throwing the ball so much in the 4th quarter with the game in hand. Don't these guys know what thin skin our head coach has? I hope the rest of the reporters mention the running up of the score and don't take the lead of Oates...holding the coaching staff accountable when it was the other team running up the score. I don't want Brett in a bad mood when I see him at the steak house. Next Oates will be saying coach B should spend more time prepping and less pimping Barry's investment. What will Oates do next year when it's sure to be worse for our boys? Good thing they let the band back in because the action off the field is the only thing worth the price of admission. Deja vu?
