UW football: Loss ranks among worst in program history
(10/13/2008 2:09 PM)
PSUOldGuy says:
Ok, a few things:
1. I was at the 2004 UW/PSU game and had an absolute blast in Madison from Thursday evening through Sunday morning. The UW fans were gracious, friendly, and good sports all around. Of all the away PSU games I have been to, that was by far the best experience (except for losing the game itself, which we can blame no one for!)
2. To those great UW fans, hang in there. We had our share of bad times at PSU, even with our legendary head coach. It's just the way it goes, so keep on having fun in Madtown and give your team a break...they need your support right now.
3. To the PSU fans who say they never heard boos in the Beav, get real. I have heard PLENTY of them during the dark years of the early 2000's, mostly at the coaching. But as ashamed as I am to admit it, some of them were even leveled at our players at times (anyone remember Anthony Morelli just LAST YEAR?) It is never right to boo a non-professional athlete at any age, and PSU fans, just like fans of every other program in history, have behaved poorly at times.
Good luck the rest of the way Badgers, and have a beer at Wando's for me.

Clemson just fired its coach after going 3-3 after being ranked in the preseason top ten to start the season. Hmmmmmm.

I seem to recall several Alvarez teams that had high expectations and finished barely over 500. Yet, I don't hear anyone saying anything about that. Yes, the Badgers had a meltdown in the 2nd half of the Michigan game and the entire Penn State game, but give them the whole season before sentencing them to execution. What takes more guts, to boo anonomously or play in front of 80,000+ people on national tv. Grow up & support them or stop watching.

haaaaaaaank says:
I was at the game last night. Maybe it was just me, but i felt most of the boo's were geared toward the coaching staff. They seem to make the same bonehead mistakes every week for the past few weeks. By no means should people freak out and call for bielema and the rest of the coaches to be fired. However, it is definatley concerning. The rest of the season should say a lot about this football program's future. Yes quite of few of the boos were for Evridge as well. The bottom line is that he is a very ineffective QB. I admire him for giving his best effort, but unfortunatley effort alone doesnt win games. Fumbling, INT's, Missing open WR's, holding onto the ball too long, indecisiveness, getting balls batted down. This just doesnt cut it in the big ten. Sherer probably isnt the answer either. He didnt look a whole lot better. WI has plenty of playmakers on offense. So either our QB's are absolutely terrible or the playcalling is totally ineffective. Probably a combination of both. Hopefully some of the younger guys will use the rest of this season to get some reps and gain some experience. I cant help but think next year could be worse though. If the defense is getting shredded this bad now, just think how bad it could be when all the seniors are gone. Bielemas recruiting classes arent exactly what one would call "stacked" either. He gets the in-state talent and thats about it. I guess that is a good thing, but it only produces maybe 1 or 2 four star recruits every year. Then the rest of the class is made up of the leftover guys ohio state, michigan, michigan state, illinois, and penn state dont want. Right now, not a whole lot of help is on the way except curt phillips and tyler westphal. Its kind of depressing to think about.

Please don't boo college athletes.
(10/12/2008 6:26 PM)
Riverwoodie says:
Until the Badgers get a winning conference record I propose that the Athletic Department suspend playing those video taped interviews on the jumbotron with the players... last night during that embarrassing meltdown, Camp Randall fans were "entertained" by players talking about which teammates have the messiest apartments/homes. PLEASE turn off the TV cameras and head back to the practice field. I really don't want the Badger games to return to the nonsense of the 70s and 80s.
(10/12/2008 4:37 PM)
Larryb says:
Bottom line is that Penn State proved last night they are a vastly superior football team and a lot better than the Badgers. Having been born and raised in Milwaukee, I have always had a soft spot for Wisconsin and the fabulous Badger band. The loss last night was not a drubbing, it was an armageddon. I can't recall many games where there was such a distance in talent and performance. Give a salute to the Nittany Lions. They will represent the Big Ten very well. Remember Badgers, you can't win em all even at Camp Randall Stadium. See you in 2011.

Homes says:
I'll never boo a bunch of college athletes, but any of you that were booing an egomaniac coach who is finally be exposed as the second coming of Ray Rhodes, feel free to continue.

whodat says:
I posted on Lucas Q&A thread - I am no homer, from out of state & watched the game w/ a die hard UW fan: good news is the rest of the way Badgers are likely to go 5-1 so get a grip. They will be solid favorites against all but Illinois & MSU. MSU is the best team they face going forward but UW matches up pretty well against running teams. Illinois isn't as good but their strengths are Badger weaknesses (& reverse) so who knows. I see them splitting those two games and winning the rest of the way out. I think you can step away from the ledge.

Have another beer n some cheese badger fans it will drown out you WHINING!!!

dcbadgerboy says:
It is funny to hear the hipocracy with the PSU fans. It wasn't that long ago that they were all calling for JoePa to "retire already." The Badgers will rebound. We'll learn alot about the current coaches in the next month. They will respond or they won't. As far as long winters as stated by the Penn State fan??? State College, PA winters must be brutally long when you are forced to watch that Penn State basketball team of yours.
(10/12/2008 11:32 AM)
Sal says:
I was at the UW victory over Penn State in 2003 at Beaver Stadium. A group of Penn State fans asked us if we'd run over Joe on the way back to Wisconsin.
(10/12/2008 10:41 AM)
Jay says:
Get a clue Wisconsin fans, quit drinking and start getting ready for the miserable winters that ahead for you all. tRASHY DRUNKEN WISCONSIN FANS YOU ARE. THE BOOS SHOULD BE AIMED AT YOU NOT THE PLAYERS. PUT THE BRATS AND BEER ASIDE AND READJUST YOUR ATTITUDES. I NEVER WAS IMPRESSED WITH CAMP RANDALL ANYWAY. GO PENN STATE
(10/12/2008 10:38 AM)
Joe Pa? says:
"PSU I'm all of a sudden for you??" Again, I believe your fans were singing a different tune a few years back. If you would like to turn a blind eye to recent history and all the PSU fans who were calling for Joe Pa's head (cough- retirement) please pat yourself on the back for not being one of them.
Give me a break when you say: PSU fans don't boooo their team. Please make sure you take the ear plugs out of your cranium next year when PSU comes back to reality and fields a less than .500 team and again PSU fans are talking about Joe Pa's forced retirement!
Forget about who's kids are on the field. If you got off the couch every once in a while and went to a game, you would reaize people are shelling out thousands of dollars each year too not only the games, but also the alumni associations that go along with being a true fan and alum. I'm not condoning booing kids but lets be real here. These are 18-22 year old adults. It's not like we are sitting at the local high schools booing 16 year old fragile egos (a.k.a. kids-as you like to call them).
If you were ever part of a true team atmosphere when playing college sports you would know that the athletes don't hear anything that is going on in the crowd due to concentrating on the game. I know this from experience.
So here is the level Mr. (or Mrs.) "I'm all of a sudden back on Joe Pa's band wagon." Go find a PSU blog to piss and moan with all your "arm chair QB's" who like to talk about how you would have gone D1 if it wasn't for your high school coach holding you back (hypocrit!)

To PSU-IM-4-U ...You are living in La La Land.
I have many friends that graduated from PSU and have been to probably 20 games in Happy Valley over the years.
I have heard many boos at the PSU games.
I've heard people tell Joe Pa to check into an "F" retirement home. Next you'll be telling me no one boos at an Eagles games either. Do me a favor and take your glee club pin off and shove it up your......
(10/12/2008 10:14 AM)
Jim says:
Camp Randall should change it's name to camp Re-hab as long as Bret Dilemma is here. My voice is gone from last night but my fingers feel fine
this morning.."Boooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!"
(10/12/2008 10:11 AM)
PSU-IM-4-U says:
UMMMMM JOE PA??? AGAIN WOULD YOU BOO IF IT WAS YOUR CHILD ON THE FIELD....I DOUBT IT.... PENN STATE FANS DONT BOO THEIR PLAYERS.... UNLESS U GO THERE OR BEEN THERE YOU WOULD SEE THIS!!! GET REAL!!! ANOTHER EXCUSE FOR POOR BEHAVIOR....LOL .. GUESS YOU HAVE NOTHING BETTER TO DO...HAVE A LIONTASTIC DAY!! WE ARE ....PENN STATE!!!
(10/12/2008 9:53 AM)
Joe Pa? says:
To all the PSU fans who wrote in to this blog, please take a look in the mirror when talking about the frustration of UW fans. Need I remind you of the poor play (and record) of your own team as recently as 4 years ago? I believe if we went back and checked the media blogs of those teams, there would be ample frustration for the core fans of PSU and the calling for the retirement of Joe Pa and his inner circle of assistants. Don't come on a UW blog and spout off about how we don't respect our players or program. Get off your "high horses" and talk amongst your elitist PSU fan clubs and leave UW fans to wollow in our own self pity! Shame on you PSU hippocrits!

San Diego Badger says:
I haven't seen such a lack of discipline on a team since the days of Dave McClain, and even that may be questionable after last night's debacle. 12 men in a huddle? Keystone Kops on defense last week against Ohio State? Clock management by dyslexics? What is a shame is that a major college program cannot get even a half-way decent quarterback to commit to UW. I hope Alan Evridge is studying hard to get his degree, because a pro quarterback he ain't. I'm sure he's a nice kid, but the coaches know the talent they have to put on the field, don't they. DeAndre Levy's comment sounded like sour grapes. Not listening to boos? Only playing for the coaches and teammates? How about a little personal pride and motivation? Next time you ask the fans to cheer you on, think about what you said here. Surely you don't think we'll believe that you don't pay attention to the boos. You do, but know they aren't all for you. A mercurial team emotion is the fault of a bad coaching
system. What happened? Bielema started off 17-1 and since is 7-7, if memory serves. Is that just a lack of talent, or how the talent is utilized? I'm sure it's a little of both.
(10/12/2008 8:45 AM)
Jay says:
I find it disturbing to read these comments by Badger fans. I am a PSU graduate, and life long Lion fan. I can't believe how you all are getting down on your team and coach. First of all, give Penn State some credit, this is one heck of a football team we have this year, may be the second best team I have seen them put on the feild in 40 years of studying them. Second of all, this is just a bump in the road for you Badgers. Bielema is a good coach, don't be so quick to critize him, look what happened to Michigan when their fans got a new coach.
(10/12/2008 8:42 AM)
Mauston Mastodon says:
We've been through worse. We'll come back. Bielema is a fundamentally sound coach, though he makes the typical mistakes of immaturity--that kickoff stunt he pulled two years ago has insured that JoePa will have Penn State in peak form whenever they play the Badgers. He had us overly fired up for the Michigna game. He should have known we couldn't sustain that emotional intensity for three straight games, and O.S. and P.S. were obviously going to be games where we needed it. His failure to show confidence in Evridge whose performance has been uneven but who has enormous potential hurt this week. On the other hand, Bielema is smart. He learns from his mistakes. The next three games are going to pose an enormous challenge and Minnesota will not be a cakewalk. We need to get behind this team and shown them support. Booing is never helpful. It is merely a way for frustrated fans to vent their feelings. Let's have some faith in our boys. It's always darkest right before dawn.

PSU-IM-4-U says:
Being a Penn State Alumni and a PROUD NITTANY LION fan gotta say i was kinda in DISBELIEF at the way BADGER fans react to their team... VERY SAD, these are college kids, doing the best that they can. Alumni or not WOULD YOU BOO YOUR CHILD ON THAT FIELD????? Get a clue Badger fans & GROW UP . Guess i can see why the call you cheeseheads....LOL ...Being a true fan your with that team WIN OR LOSE. So get with the program, BADGER FANS. you wouldnt do it to your CHILD. DONT DO IT TO OTHERS. SO QUIT POINTING FINGERS AND LET YOUR BADGER PRIDE SHOW. THOSE KIDS WORK HARD & DO THE BEST THAT THEY CAN!!!Dont think we will hurry to travel to Camp Randall again. But not sorry we did as the best team oviously won. WE ARE ... PENN STATE!!!!

Nate says:
Barry, get ahead of the curve on this 1. Be prepared to put BB on notice if after 2 more losses that there better be an immediate turn-a-round next year or its bye-bye.

spoon468 says:
You win some, you lose some. I'm not sure why Bielema is being so hard on himself and why the fans are being such d-bags about it. So Wisconsin is having a tough season- the Packers' home advantage came tumbling down a couple years ago, yet it is still difficult to buy tickets for any of the games. Football fans in this state will still come to Madison to watch whatever is on the field. What are we going to do on football Saturdays- NOT get up, drink and watch football? Rrrrrriiiiight. It's ok, people. It's ok! The team will be fine.

Bucky sucky.
(10/12/2008 6:55 AM)
mort says:
Bielema is a very smart guy. He cancelled, like a gigantic weak pansy, Va Tech, so the fans could maybe see a victory against Cal Poly. The low point in Wisconsin football history. Don Morton you are off the hook. Losing 48-7 to Penn State is no big deal, it is a game. But knowing that competing with the big boys is out of the question on our current track is disappointing.

Gopher Fan says:
When I travel to Iowa for a game I hear,,,
GO HAWKS! The First - Last - and only time I will travel to Madison,,, All I heard was Minnesota SUCKS! Who sucks Now?
There is a reason beer sales at the Metrodome are shut down a quarter earlier than usual when the BAdgers come to town. Drunken Trashy Wisconsin Fans are getting what they deserve.

craig says:
Everyone take a hard look at the program over the last two years...try to find a quality win. The writing is on the wall here and it needs to be dealt with before things get out of hand.
Simply put: Bielema has done a terrible job. He needs to feel some heat and make some improvements or we need to find a big name coach with proven record...SOON!
(10/12/2008 4:06 AM)
William 5 says:
again, these idiots pointing fingers at the players. let me tell you something, as a true fan who's been here for 20+ years... Barry didn't have the talent, but found a way to win. That's no longer the case... we have the speed, the size, the talent to match up, and we keep getting worked. Sloppy tackling, sloppy special teams (a freakin' hallmark of Alvarez's teams were brilliant special teams), a lame ass offensive game plan... Bielema's a b*tch and so is his O coordinator and D coordinator.

Yeah I guess the people who are helping mr levy through school, he doesnt care for any one. LISTEN UP mr LEVY! WE PAY LOTS OF $$ TO SEE THIS CRAP ON THE FIELD, WE DESERVE TO BOO!

48-7 says:
"I heard the boos," senior linebacker DeAndre Levy said. "We don't really pay attention to that. We don't really play for that.We play for our teammates and our coaches."
...You heard it folks. DeAndre doesn't play for boos or fans or alumni or season ticket holders. His defense plays to give up 48 points at home for "teammates and coaches".
