Senior Jessie Vetter notched her fourth shutout of the season and her 29th of her career as the No. 1-ranked University of Wisconsin Badgers women's hockey team skated past Bemidji State 4-0 Friday night at the John Glas Fieldhouse in Bemidji, Minn.
Vetter recorded 20 saves as the Badgers outshot the Beavers 51-20. Wisconsin improves to 7-0-0, 3-0-0 WCHA) as the Beavers fall to 1-2-2, 0-1-0 (WCHA).
The first period was scoreless with multiple scoring opportunities for the Badgers as they were able to kill off two penalties and out-shoot the Beavers 11-9.
Wisconsin scored twice in the second period to give the Badgers the 2-0 advantage. Sophomore Hilary Knight started the scoring for the Badgers off a pass from senior Erika Lawler. Lawler fed Knight the puck in the slot as Knight put it past the right shoulder of BSU goalie Zuzana Tomcikova.
Two minutes later, only six minutes into the second period Lawler had her second goal of the season. Senior Angie Keseley took a shot and Lawler stuffed the puck in off of the rebound. Knight was also credited with the assist.
In the third period sophomore Kelly Nash and Ammerman, put the game away with two power-play goals to increase the lead to 4-0 for the final score. Nash tipped the puck in off a slap shot from Matthews at the point. Junior Jasmine Giles was also credited with the assist.
Ammerman had her ninth goal of the season in six consecutive games. Nash broke the puck to the middle where Ammerman picked it up and put the puck past Tomcikova's blocker from the slot.
UW will continue the series Saturday night as the two teams will play in the first ever women's U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame Game at the Eveleth Hippodrome in Eveleth, Minn.
