BROOKINGS, S.D. -- A torrid first half for South Dakota State led to a season-opening loss for the University of Wisconsin women's basketball team.
The Jackrabbits shot nearly 73 percent in the first half, leading to a 64-44 win over the Badgers in front of 2,812 in Frost Arena.
"That's a really good team," UW coach Lisa Stone said of South Dakota State. "It's a team we're going to face in a similar talent level within our league."
The Badgers (0-1) committed 23 turnovers, had only five assists and shot just 34 percent. Wisconsin was led by sophomore Alyssa Karel with 11 points and five rebounds. Freshman Anya Covington had eight points and four rebounds, and sophomore Tara Steinbauer added seven points.
South Dakota State (2-0) outrebounded the Badgers 41-30.
The Badgers open their home season on Thursday, hosting Drake at 7:30 p.m. in the Kohl Center.
