ST. CLOUD, Minn. — You looked at the lineup chart and your first reaction was that it was either a joke, a ruse or a misprint.

Wisconsin Badgers men's hockey coach Mike Eaves saw it for what it was: A dangerous reality that wound up causing him all sorts of trouble Friday night at the National Hockey Center.

The St. Cloud State line chart listed center Garrett Roe and right winger Ryan Lasch on its fourth line, which is a bit like having Muhammad Ali on the undercard or Hannah Montana as the warm-up act.

Roe, the leading scorer in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association, accounted for two goals, while Lasch, the reigninging league scoring champion, had a pair of beautiful assists that helped carry the Huskies to a 6-2 victory before a crowd of 6,010.

"That's not their fourth line,'' Eaves said, a small, mocking smile on his face. "They list it as their fourth line. They're trying to sneak it in on us.''

You could have sneaked a convoy of semis past the Badgers (4-7-2 overall, 4-5-2 in the WCHA) on a night their five-game unbeaten streak came to an end amid a flurry of ugliness. There were poor performances throughout the lineup, starting with senior goaltender Shane Connelly and excluding no one.

In some respects, UW looked a lot like the club that opened the season with a seven-game winless stretch (0-6-1). The only difference was that Connelly, according to Eaves, performed "below average'' Friday night after being mostly hung out to dry during the October swoon.

"When we had the puck, we didn't take care of it,'' Eaves said. "When we didn't have it, we were watching the puck and left people alone.''

Junior left winger John Mitchell and sophomore defenseman Brendan Smith (power play) scored goals for the Badgers, who had an edge on the shot chart (34-27) and in faceoffs (36-26), but couldn't finish when it mattered.

Meanwhile, St. Cloud State (8-4, 3-3) won for the fifth straight time and you can pick from a variety of reasons why.

Goaltender Jase Weslosky denied a breakaway and an odd-man rush when the outcome was in doubt en route to 32 saves, and right winger Travis Novak scored a heads-up shorthanded goal in the first period, capitalizing on an awkward sequence by Connelly.

Connelly came well out out of his cage to play a loose puck along the left boards. Novak got there at the same time and chipped it into the near corner while Connelly hustled back toward his cage.

Novak held the puck below the goal line until Connelly was just about back into position. Then Novak shot at Connelly's skates, using his momentum against him to guide the puck into the net.

"Thinking about it, I could have maybe made a little bit better play on it and maybe not rushing back to the net,'' Connelly said. "At the same time, I'm not leaving that net unattended.

"I scored that goal. It was just one of those things.''

But it was Roe and Lasch, whose collaborations gave the Huskies breathing room when they needed it most.

For some reason, St. Cloud State coach Bob Motzko listed Roe, Lasch and left winger Jared Festler as his fourth line. Motzko also had Roe listed as his fourth-line center last week during a WCHA sweep of Denver.
