BLACKSBURG, Va. -- Guess again if you think anybody connected with the University of Wisconsin men's basketball team is feeling sorry for themselves because the Badgers are on the road again for a Big Ten/ACC Challenge game.

The Badgers certainly got skewered by Big Ten Conference officials, who scheduled them to play talented Virginia Tech here Monday night for their sixth road contest in the 10-year history of the Challenge. No other Big Ten team has played more Challenge games on the road.

To make matters far worse, the Badgers are playing the only Challenge game on Monday night despite the fact they played Saturday and were off the mainland last week at the Paradise Jam tournament at St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands. UW coach Bo Ryan said that Big Ten officials knew all that when they OK'd the date.

The obvious Monday game should be Virginia at Minnesota, which will be played Tuesday. The Gophers played Saturday, earning a 90-76 victory over North Dakota State. But the quick turnaround wouldn't be as big a deal for them because they aren't traveling. Virginia, meantime, played and lost 73-70 Friday night at Syracuse and would have had an extra day to prepare.

Another possible Monday game could have been Duke-Purdue. Both teams played last Friday, but that is one of the Challenge's marquee matchups, so ESPN, which sponsors the Challenge, wanted it Tuesday. But why not have a marquee game to kick off the Challenge?

Not many Big Ten teams are facing a more daunting Challenge challenge this week than the Badgers, who were stung in this event by Duke 82-58 at Cameron Indoor Stadium last year. The ACC's Hokies certainly aren't complaining about the scheduling. After getting off to a shaky start with weak wins over Elon, Gardner-Webb and Mount St. Mary's, they've had a week to fix what ails them and prepare for the Badgers on their home floor.

Ryan was upset last April when he learned the Badgers were playing a Challenge game on the road for a second straight year. He was upset again this fall when he learned the game was approved to be played on a Monday night.

But it's not bothering him anymore. Ryan won't let anything wreck his focus on preparing the Badgers (5-1) for the Hokies (4-2). "All that doesn't enter my mind," said Ryan of the Challenge scheduling. "We just play."

That is the attitude all the Badgers are taking to this difficult test for the team and its conference. The Badgers are 3-6 overall in Challenge games, and the Big Ten is 0-9 in the series.

"I think the bottom line is the Big Ten has to play better. We have to play better during that stretch of the season, and we haven't done that," said associate head coach Greg Gard. "That's on us to make sure we're taking care of business on our end. All we can control is what Wisconsin does.

"Nobody is going to feel sorry for us," Gard added. "We just have to do it like we'll have to do it in March. It'll prepare us and make us tougher for what we see down the stretch."

all you people saying "suck it up" obviously have never done anything more athletic than balance your bowl of chips on your gut while watching others compete. to have to play two games in three days, the second on the road, just after returning from 3 games in 4 days and 2 five hour plane rides, when your own conference, who is supposed to look out for your interests, could have easily avoided this scenario, is a complete screw job. i don't know the whole story off the top of my head, but its been well documented about that there is a guy high up at the Big Ten that hates UW. that a person with a vendetta would be allowed to work for a conference is a total joke. grow up.

As a season ticket holder, I would much rather watch the game in person than on TV. I agree with Coach Gard, home games are good for the players and their families as well as fans (season ticket holders). Unfortunately, the TV contracts often get their way in the end. Hopefully 2009 and 2010 will right this wrong.

The debate over whether the US Virgin Islands is part of "the country" is now moot, as Rob opted to be conservative and change the language in his story. It is an interesting debate though. The Virgin Islands are not a "state" so how can they be part of "The United States of America"? But they are our territory, so people born there are American citizens, and you don't need a passport to get back and forth.

Dude says:
Chill, just an FYI for you, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands are United States Territories. The United States has some areas that are not states yes. Just because it's not a state doesn't mean it's not part of the US. Learn your history next time, maybe YOU'RE the one that never finished high school.

chill says:
Hey Barry did you finish high school? Their are only 50 states in the US, The virgin Islands are not one of them.

To Badger Fan from afar: "Even on the road they have kept their end of the bargain in beating the ACC for most of the time." Huh? See below

1999: at Wake Forest Loss 48-67
2001: at Georgia Tech Loss 61-62
2003: at Maryland Loss 67-73
2005: at Wake Forest Loss 88-91
2007: at Duke Loss 58-82

Suck it up and win the game. The NCAA tournament isn't played on the home court either, so learn to win on the road...

Mowry says:
Ummm, the Badgers have never won a road game in the Challenge. Hello...
This will be a tough game, and would be tough even in Madison.

Badger from afar says:
It's so true though when you think about how dominate the badgers are at home. Even on the road they have kept their end of the bargain in beating the ACC for most of the time. It's time for other teams to step it up and finally win won showing just how dominate the big 10 is in basketball

The Badgers played out of the country? I thought they were in the US (United States) Virgin Islands? Maybe I'm wrong, I thought I recalled seeing ads on the tv on how you didn't even need a passport to go there. Oh maybe that was Puerto Rico, where Virginia Tech played, is that a foreign country that you need a passport to get into. I just don't know, I guess, much like the editor of this story. Heck why would anybody ever want to leave Wisconsin, including the basketball team?
(12/1/2008 8:46 AM)
a says:
The schedulers just know that no other Big 10 team could handle as many road games!
(12/1/2008 8:25 AM)
says:
Boo hoo. The Badgers have to play on the road too soon after a vacation to the Virgin Islands. And they've had to travel just over half the time. The world is so unfair!
